Addiction doesn’t discriminate. It affects the young, the elderly, the wealthy, the poor. Your age or socioeconomic class is irrelevant to the drugs and alcohol that infect our society. Treatment providers all around the Chicagoland area are fighting the good fight to help those struggling to get the help they deserve. The idea of treatment is daunting, scary, and makes us uneasy at first. At least it did for me.

As of this writing I’ve been sober for 6 years, I was an addict with a crippling IV meth addiction and a plethora of drugs for years before that. It’s scary to think about going into a new place, full of strangers, who are going to force us to talk about our mental health and drug use. The only reason we are considering going is because we know how bad of a problem we have. The reality is once we make that decision to go our lives get significantly better. The improvement is unreal. The feeling of hopelessness fades away and is replaced with the feeling of confidence, pride, and hope. Housing can be a setback in a patient's ability to attend treatment, especially after the initial detox process. In early recovery detox and inpatient facilities provide housing for patients. After that patients are referred to an intensive outpatient program like the Hendrickson House of Sobriety where they’re involved in a plethora of therapy sessions both in group and individual settings. Our intensive outpatient program provides housing for patients for their stay at our facility.

Overcoming pre-conceived perceptions and limiting beliefs is one of the most difficult things to do. Stressors like the basic necessities of life significantly hinder a person's ability to concentrate on recovery. Providing housing as a part of the treatment program alleviates that concern resulting in an increased success rate for patients. A good treatment program will assist residents with

obtaining government assistance like food stamps, EBT, or SNAP. This is especially helpful for those that come from homelessness with no job or place to live. Treatment can be the platform to get them back on their feet emotionally and financially. Once a patient has the basic necessities met, they are able to focus on what matters most.
